The Bound Ascension Book 2 KA Linde 9781682308769 Books Reviews
- Though I couldn't finish this novel, I have to say I did actually enjoy Book 1 a lot.
We were introduced to a somewhat sheltered, snobby and beautiful girl who gets what she think she wants in life in Book 1. Turns out she just got a ticket to Intrigue Central and she's caught the eye of a lonely king with no heirs, and a sly crown prince almost immediately. To make everything worse it turns out she has magic in this seemingly magic-less world.
In Book 2 she realizes she needs to find out how to control it. So suddenly everyone wants to go with her, she manages to sneak out of the clutches of her government with their help and everyone still adores her. Suddenly the world is full of mythical creatures and magic she just never knew about because the rulers overthrew the original magical overlords and banned magic. Every "aha" moment is clumsily thrust into our faces like an afterthought. By the way there are elves. And monsters. Elemental magic. And by some stroke of fate she is the Chosen One who can use all elements and can actually save the world.
By the time we get through most of Book 2, three men are in love with her and her friends will follow her to the ends of the earth because they have nothing better to do and, did I mention everyone loves her?
I had a hard time liking the heroine because she doesn't deserve any of it. She never works for anything and is miraculously blessed with good fortune and friends to help her escape even the most dire of situations. She also has a problem with doing things alone. Less people to adore her, I suppose. Can't have that, can we?
She is the too good center of attention. Everyone loves her. The king is obsessed with her. The villain is an evil guy but he wants her too. She is saved by (yet another) handsome prince before the end. How many princes will this girl run into before we're through and can she make them all fall madly in love with her without lifting a finger?
I had a hard time liking the story at this point because it was so incredibly linear, with very little character development and relationships that were forced and barely held together by threads of choppy plot and prose. - The plot gets more interesting with the introduction of Dean's storyline. I honestly went from 100% devoted to Dean to 100% against him before the end of the book. His reaction to the events at the end of the book (not revealing spoilers if I can help it) really stunned me because they didn't make sense; they seem out of character for him -- he comes off as weak and not knowing his own mind -- but it provides a major plot twist which I loved picking up again in the next book.
What I think my biggest complaint is other than a sometimes wandering and loose plot, is that I thought this was a romance/action series. Instead there really is very little romance which disappointed me. Even when there is romance in the later books, it is significantly downplayed to the degree that you might miss it entirely if you skip ahead one or two sentences.
I am looking forward to reading the last book when it comes out this fall but I confess there were a number of times I had to put the books down and walk away because I just needed a break from the repetition of the Cyrene's thoughts. Suggestion to author is to ruthlessly edit story elements down so that inner character dialogue is used to introduce new thoughts and ideas rather than re-hash old thoughts and information over and over and over. And please turn up the romance. Puh-lease?? - My heart is broken and my stomach is in my throat! KA Linde just put me through an emotional workout. I don't know what to do myself. Okay, that's not totally true....I'm going to read The Consort ASAP! I'm dying to know how this series ends. It’s utterly enthralling!
Here's the breakdown I don't even know if I can sum this up articulately. So much happened in book 2. SO MUCH! Cyrene meets new travel companions, finds out magical creatures she thought were fairytales were actually real, finds the two people she longed to find, and possibly finds true love.
What I loved The action and adventure were thrilling. I love the quest Cyrene embarks upon. She's brace and unwavering in her pursuit of answers. I loved her so much more in the installment. She really comes into her own. The character development is off the charts amazing.
The introduction of new threats and adversaries coupled with new allies! The new allies are particularly pleasant. Avoca is everything! The nature of her relationship with Cyrene is worth 5 stars alone. I loved everything about how their story has played out so far.
The romance isn't over the top, but really hit the spot. I have no idea who I want Cyrene to end up with.
The ending through me into a tailspin of epic proportions. I don't know where she goes from here. I'm heartbroken, so I know she is too.
I thought I had things figured out, but alas....I know nothing. LOL
If you love epic, thrilling, positively brilliant YA reads, AND WHO DOESN'T? You need to read this series!! It’s bloody brilliant!
