Botanicals 100 Postcards from the Archives of the New York Botanical Garden The New York Botanical Garden 9781524759049 Books Reviews

  • I was SO excited to order these but very disappointed when I received them. I still think it's a great value for the price, but it could have been better if they just chose different stock to print them on. I collect Botanical art and illustration on a small scale, and these are "eh". The illustrations are fine (I wish some of them hadn't been zoomed in and cropped going off the edges), but what got me was the cards themselves- they are matte and BRIGHT WHITE. I'm used to botanical illustration being on cream or ivory backgrounds, which make the kind of earthy colors of the art "pop". On matte white, the illustrations seem a little dull, and the BRIGHT negative space competes too much with the illustrations themselves.

It's like if you found some low resolution images online and printed them on your home printer on matte white cardstock you get at the office supply store. That's basically what these cards are, so I'm disappointed.
  • After spending quite some time looking just about everywhere for simple "Thank You" postcards, I FINALLY found these on . (I even looked on a while back, but never saw these until last week.) All I wanted or needed was pretty cards to include with the packages I post to my buyers on Ebay. Something simple, something tasteful. It is harder than one would think to find such a thing. Thank goodness someone put this box of cards together-----and at such a terrific price, too.

I saw one "poison" plant card which I probably won't be sending to anyone. Too bad I didn't have this card when I sold my awesome old cobalt blue glass Owl Drug poison bottle a couple years ago. It would have been a great card to send with that little bottle.

Such wonderful art on each and everyone of these cards. I have posted a photo of eight of my favorites for you to see-----and these are eight I picked out of only about 30 that I have looked at so far. It is an embarrassment of riches to have these sublime cards on hand.

I love the address lines, too. Whenever I post a package, I make sure and write on a card what the item is being posted, along with the address. You never know when and how mail may get waylaid and the outside address destroyed.

There is one problem that I foresee, however I will spend too much time trying to decide on just the right card to share and it will be painful to give up many of these, as each one is splendid and deliciously enchanting in its own right.

Buy these cards. You will love them, too.
  • A wonderful collection of illustrations on very heavy cardstock, just perfect for the frequent postcard correspondence I indulge in. I got them to answer all the Christmas cards I got this year, and it was great fun picking out who got which plant. With the way the USPS mangles mail these days I especially appreciate the heavy duty cardstock, they will make it through the machine sorting without tearing. Unlike another reviewer's opinion, the bright white paper does not seem jarring to me, it lets the ink colors be that much brighter. And yes, some of the flower images do bleed off the edges, but again I do not find that problematic. They are beautiful and would be appreciated by any recipient.
  • Beautiful collection of botanical illustrations on high quality postcards. The cards are thick and have a matte finish to minimize ink smudging. They also have a lined address area to make for more legible addresses. I'm looking forward to sending these beautiful cards.
  • LOVE! These postcards are absolutely beautiful. I thought there would be multiples of the nine images shown on the box, but every single card is different. They are all frame worthy, so you can use them as art! The writing space isn’t huge, but it’s a postcard, you’re not supposed to write your life story on it. I’m very pleased with this purchase.
  • These postcards are seriously BEAUTIFUL. I made a commitment at the beginning of the year to write one postcard every day and I'm so happy I ordered these. The quality is unmatched. The cards are thick, well made, and the designs are super tasteful - appropriate for literally anything Birthdays, Thank Yous, Thinking of You's etc. I LOVE the matte finish, too. It's never fun to write on a shiny postcard that either smudges or doesn't even let you write in the first place. The writing side of the postcard is also great. I appreciate the lines for the address and it's a good amount of space to write. I usually can fit about 3-4 sentences. In short, HIGHLY recommend. I just ordered 3 more boxes so I have enough for my year-long commitment. )
  • I like these cards. Some of the cactus strike me as amusing. I guess those are for using when I'm feeling prickly.
  • I bought these to use all decor in my apartment and I love them. The colors are vivid and the paper is thick and durable. I love the box that it comes in and the little ribbon inside so you can easily lift the stack of postcards out without flipping the whole box over.
