  • Alex Jones is about to finish his last year of high school when his life is turned upsidedown. He discovers several recent homicides are somehow connected to his past and sets out to discover exactly what this connection is, with the help of Amy, his best friend.

I thought An Unsettled Past was a surprisingly good thriller. The plot is well thought out with several unexpected twists along the way. Unfortunately the rather wooden and unnatural dialogue lets it down. If this could be worked upon and tightened up, I wouldn't hesitate to rate this 4 out of 5. This is the author's first book and with a little more experience and confidence I can see only good things ahead.

Thanks to author C.L. Brees for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
  • Alex Jones has found himself in a most difficult spot. His past and his present have collided in dramatic fashion leaving those he loves in danger. This book is a solid debut from C.L. Brees and I found myself moving quickly through the pages. Just when I would try to anticipate what might be coming next I was thrown for a loop.

This book is different from what I normally read, but I'm glad it was suggested to me. The author has developed a solid plot with several twists and turns along the way. I would highly recommend giving this book a read. Good job!
  • I enjoyed reading this solid first novel. I intended to read a chapter each night, which is my normal pace, but wound up reading the whole thing in 2 days as I got increasingly caught up in it. Told through the viewpoint (and often amusing dialogue) of a group of high school seniors whose angst over finals week is suddenly replaced with fear for their lives as they are caught up in a mass-murder mystery. As a connection to one of the teens is revealed, the stakes get higher--and the pages turned faster and faster for me as I was caught up in the story and wanted to see what happened next, while fearing the answer. I could see this group of characters -- whose refreshing diversity is clear and nicely woven into the exposition but not trumpeted by the author -- becoming the new Scooby gang in a series aimed at young adults. I hope we get to follow their next adventures as they move on to college and beyond.
